Regarding to the invasion of American English into the King's English, a member of the House of Commons, Mr. Barns who belongs to the Labor Union Party in UK. submitted the bill that English TV. should not use the American English,say, Elevator, Vacation, Movie etc.etc. in stead Lift, Holiday, Film. As a result. this radical bill was rejected.
My English acquaintance who is a pre-school teacher and creating her own British tea gave a following comment.
"I particularly like the article about American English! It is difficult
to
avoid such American words as elevator, vacation and so on.
Still, I feel as though I have to adopt American words, especially
while I continue to work for an international school with predominantly
American families!!"
According to the British Council, 20 billion people in the world
speak English in 5 years. Mr.J.Hunfry, who was the M.C..of BBC.ironically commented that English wanted to say that
our English would be common language. Unfortunately,
it was not our English but American English.
I happened to read an article with Queen's English written by a reader of The Japan Times.
"The standard of English ,now known as Queen's English,
has been the norm. Queen's English , as set out by the ultimate authority on English , The Oxford Dictionary, is taught as the standard in the whole of Britain.
Therefore, the standard of English in England should be the standard
of English in the world.
While Japan continues to use and teach the inferior American
English,there is a standard out there.
England is the home of English,hence the name."
In my opinion, I consent this fact from my hand on knowledge as my children corrected my English accent,
that I was taught in my childhood while they learned American English at school. The statics in 90's showed
that one-fifth English got irritated the American accent.
Needless to say, it is inevitable and advantageous to use American
English to trade with American companies. I am afraid that Chinese will be the world's language
in near future.
