According to a movie columnist of the Mainichi, Americans have an inferiority complex because of their short history. They often repeatedly tell a story that they respect a culture which has a long history and get the same feeling from it.
He reviews that this movie reflects the same pattern. Actually, it is indeed nicely made flick but he does not share the same sympathies as others. Because this drama develops utopian story of the ideal 'Samurai' in American's feeling, not being a real 'Samurai' in the history.
In addition, he is worrying about a few eyebrows being raised before seeing this movie. This is nothing but. On the contrary, director Edward Zwick surprisingly falls much in love with Japanese 'Samurai'.
My comment Judging from the review, this movie seems to be worth watching as director E.Zwick has profound knowledge and detailed understanding of 19th-century Japan.
Most of Japanese, me too, believe that only Japanese can make good Sushi. Therefore we suspect non-Japanese could not describe Japanese 'Samurai'. But this flick proves we may be wrong, I have not yet seen it though.
Also he appeals to us that the 'Bushido' or the way of 'Samurai', a code that preaches the importance of honesty, courage, honor, compassion, and values that present Japan have left in the past.
If foreigners want to study 'Bushido' , a spirit of 'Samurai', a sort of old Japanese culture, this movie might be effective, I would say.
I wish I could see it as a main cater is Tom Cruise playing together with Japanese actors and actress.
