While staying in San Francisco in September 2004, I came across to watch
'Japanese dance held by Nishizaki Midori.
Frankly speaking, I have a prejudice against Japanese dance, which is
boring. But this dance named Yaobikuni is very exciting, dramatic and
radical matched with the Biwa. The Biwa is said to be an ancient stringed
instrument brought from China to Japan about 1,500 years ago and it became
the instrument of 'Story telling' in Japan.
According to the director of this dance, he focused on a fusion of story
and music.
Yaobikuni has traditional music with Biwa and Taiko drums. I think this
Biwa plays an important role in this dance and helps us to understand the
story.
The theme of this dance is "To Live".
Princes Yaobikuni was the child of a millionaire and was in incurable
sickness. The rich father asked
a favor to the fisherman to catch mermaids and feed her the meat without
revealing it to her.
Yaobikuni has grown to be a mermaid bride.
Yaobikuni can not die because of Buddha's punishment.
